Becoming The Best You — Part 1
Worthless.
Not good enough.
Weak.
Unconfident.
Just a few words to describe how I felt about myself for years of my life.
I don't know where these feelings stem from, childhood, my teenage years, built in my twenties, or maybe a blend of all.
On the outside this may not have been the case. No one can see inside you, the real you, when you hold up a mask.
For years I was unconscious and wasn't aware of the character I was playing but as the years started to progress I knew exactly what I was doing.
But as long as people didn't know the real me, did it matter what character I was playing?
I don't think so, not if I am playing it well.
I drive a nice Mercedes.
I am earning decent money.
My clothes are nice.
I look the part.
I am attracting women.
People think I can handle myself.
So, does it matter if I keep playing this character?
It does because I couldn't hide from myself.
When the party stops and everyone goes home, I'm left scared and alone.
When I'm on my own, I know exactly how I feel about myself, worthless.
When the alcohol leaves my system, the confidence erodes.
And when I look in the mirror, I know exactly who I am: a fraud, a liar and a lost little boy who pretends to have his life together.
The boy doesn't know what to do, so he does what he always does.
Gets on with life, hides the pain, waits for it to pass and falls back into the lie.
The lie that he is the man.
The lie that he has his life together.
The lie about the person he thinks everyone wants him to be.
But lies can only go on so long when you're lying to yourself because you can't hide from your lies.
And eventually the lies you hold internally start to show externally.
People can see them on your face.
You become emotional.
The relationships break down.
The money erodes.
And the facade falls apart.
You worry everyone knows the truth about you, the real you, the one you have been masking all these years.
So you worry, you feel embarrassed and you hide away from the world doing only what you know to do.
Drink, do drugs, self sabotage and fill this empty void, you push yourself for so long, you hope that this is the last time you're in this place.
You don't want to be here but this darkness becomes home.
You're alone, left with nothing, no emotion, no thoughts and no care what happens to you.
You keep pushing only for the body to break down, you cry yourself to sleep.
Only to wake up alone, with the world on your shoulders with no hope of change.
So you do what you always do. Pull yourself together, hide away for a few days, anxiously waiting to face up to your problems.
Waiting for the feeling to pass and it does.
But as soon as it does you fall back into the same trap of self destruction and sabotage.
And end up back in the same place you were one week ago, alone, scared and contemplating whether this life is worth it or not.
But this time something is different.
Underneath the feelings of not being good enough, of being worthless, scared and anxious.
There is a little feeling.
A feeling of hope.
A feeling this is not the end.
A feeling you can do better.
And there is a voice telling you, you can.
This is only a small whisper but you listen.
It's guiding you. Guiding you to change. Guiding you to do something different.
Read the book. Give it a try.
But I hear another voice, a louder voice — "you can't read." "You have never read a book in your life." "You're not capable of reading."
As strong as this voice was. the whisper seemed more appealing.
So I will try.
The desperation to change was greater than the limitations I had.
I start slow. I read. Intrigued but the other voice persists. "This is for hippies." "This won't work." "Not for you."
I hear the voice. I ignore it. I read on.
And for the first time in my life I felt a strong pull to do what this book said.
Get up early and on time. Practice affirmations. Read.
So, I make a commitment to myself, I am going to give this my best shot.
Even If I have no belief I am am able to change
To be continued.
Well done
Well done for showing up, reading this, and being ready to take action.
Most people say they want change, few actually do something about it.
You’re one of the few.
I’d love to hear about your progress!
