Becoming The Best You — Part 3

Who do I want to be?

A question I never asked myself before.

I knew who I was, reckless, out of control, undisciplined, someone who goes mental every week. But who did I want to be? I'd never thought about it until now.

Well I guess I would like to be in control, confident, disciplined, consistent, fit, healthy, strong and successful. But I thought Jack, this seems so far off to who you are right now, is this possible?

Whether it was possible or not, just understanding who I wanted to be allowed me to gain clarity and helped me understand what I needed to do to show up as this person.

Which then moved onto question two, what do I want to achieve?

I never had goals. I said things like I want a new watch, earn more money or go on holiday but real goals? None. Nothing to seriously commit to or hold me accountable.

So I asked myself, if I want to be fit, healthy and disciplined, what would allow me to fulfil this?

That's when I decided to get into martial arts. Originally it was kickboxing but I saw someone in the gym doing Muay Thai and I made this my goal.

I also wanted to be successful but I didn't have a real career, how could I be successful? So I set myself a goal to start trading. This was short lived and I quit after 6 months but I was trying. This only helped me understand this is something I do not want to do.

Then I had a deep think about what life I wanted to live, another question I never thought about. My life was all about escaping at the weekend, or at least trying not to go out on the weekend, which I regularly fell short of. So what life did I want to live?

Well I'd love to be fresh at the weekends, treat myself and spend time with my family. So I set this in motion.

Just having clarity on who I wanted to be, the goals I wanted to achieve and the life I wanted to live gave me a purpose to change.

But then what fuelled this fire was knowing why.

Why must I change my life? Why do I want to be this person? Why do I want to achieve these goals and create this life?

It took me a while to understand.

Days passed. Still no answer.

But then it hit me one morning after another bender.

I was in pain. I looked in the mirror in disgust.

"I hate you," I said. "I've had enough."

I am going to change.

I'm not being this person anymore. I'd rather die than be who I am. I felt the pain and the fire in me. It fueled me.

No longer would I be who I was. I will become the man I know I can be.

It wasn't an easy road. Many wrong turns, U-turns and crashes. But it was progress.

My morning routine started to form and allowed me to become disciplined.

I progressed in Muay Thai and achieved my first khan.

I moved on from trading and passed my personal training exams.

I was slowly becoming who I said I wanted to be, achieving the goals I wanted and creating the life I wanted to live.

A boy who once hated himself and didn't want to live, starting to turn into a man. Far from perfect but slightly proud. A long way to go but had come a long way.

This just shows you what is possible when you take a step back from life, start figuring shit out. understanding why you want to change and then what you will do about it.

Then one day I was sitting there and this image popped inside of my head, it was the Be logo and I heard that voice again — Become The Best You.

I was energised and connected.

I ran straight to my computer, flipped it open and created the logo I have today. Small, simple and effective.

Be, Become The Best You.

This hit me and from that moment on I made it my mantra and promised it would guide my life.

I am on a mission to become my best self and I will help others do the same.

To be continued.

Become The Best You
